Invalidity Benefits

INVALIDITY BENEFIT

 A member shall qualify for invalidity benefit if invalidity occurs at any point during his/her working life. However, a member who claims for this benefit must be certified to be disabled by Professional Medical Board. In computing invalidity benefits, a member shall be treated as retiree from gainful employment and shall be payable until she/he dies

Invalidity benefits are intended to cushion members against the loss of capacity to engage in substantial gainful employment. A member shall qualify for invalidity benefit if invalidity occurs at any point in one’s working life. However, a member who claims for this benefit must be certified to be disabled by medical board. The board has to satisfy itself that the claimant is unable to engage in substantial gainful employment.

OBJECTIVE AND QUALITIES OF INVALIDITY

The invalidity benefit aims to ensure that the member continues to earn a leaving after disability and is paid to a truly deserving member. In computing invalidity benefits, the member shall be treated as having retired from gainful employment and shall be payable until death.

A member who suffers partial or total permanent disability at any point  in one’s working life with at least one monthly contribution paid to the LAPF shall qualify for the benefit, provided:

  • Employee’s disability should be duly reported to the LAPF
  • Employee’s sickness or injury should be work connected.
  • The LAPF has been duly notified of such sickness or injury

 

CONDITIONS FOR COMPENSATION

Invalidity resulting from an employment accident is compensable if;

  • Invalidity occurs at the work place
  •  The employee is performing official functions
  • If invalidity is sustained elsewhere, the employee is executing an order for the employer.

 

Conditions which invalidity can be deemed not compensable under LAPF

No benefits will be allowed to an employee or dependants if injury, sickness or disability is due to;

  • Drunkenness
  • Willful intentions to injure or to kill him/her or another
  • Notorious negligence.

 

 

Partial disabilities               

A complete and permanent loss or use of any of the following body parts does not totally prevent a member from engaging in any gainful occupation:

  • Sight of one eye
  • One foot
  • One thumb
  • One hand
  • One arm
  • One ear
  • One leg

 

Total permanent Disabilities

 

  • Complete loss of sight of both eyes
  • Loss of two limbs or above the ankles or wrists
  • Brain injury resulting to incurable imbecility or insanity
  • Such cases as determined and approved by medical board.

 

Types of invalidity benefits

  • Monthly pension
  • Lump sum amount

The monthly pension is cash benefits paid to a disabled member who has paid at least 180 monthly contributions

 

Amount of invalidity

In computing invalidity benefits the members shall be treated as having retired from gainful employment and shall be payable until death

Payment of monthly pension

A member who is entitled to monthly invalidity pension will be paid through bank and must submit bank account number and a photocopy of a bank card.

Monthly invalidity pension in case of death

Upon the death of the permanent total disability pensioner, his/her primary beneficiaries as of the date of disability shall be entitled to 100% of the monthly pension and his/her dependents to the dependent pension.

If a member has no primary beneficiaries and he/she dies within 60months from the start of his/her monthly pension. His/her secondary beneficiaries shall be entitled to a lump sum benefit equivalent to the total monthly pensions corresponding to the balance of the five year guaranteed period.

 

Monthly Death pension in absence of primary and secondary beneficiaries

If the deceased member has no primary and secondary beneficiaries at the time of his/her death the benefit will accrue to the LAPF Fund.

  • Certificate of being disabled from the medical board
  • Medical report showing extent of invalidity.
  • Letter of first appointment on permanent and pensionable terms.
  • Letter of confirmation
  • Last salary slip
  • Bank identity card
  • Passport size photography
